El Duque, et. al., Hold Knights To 3 Hits, Loses.

September 12, 2021

Knights (1-2) v. Hairys (2-1) Gm 2.

After losing the 1st game, and not remembering much of it because of all the cuss words I said, the Knights were anxious to see how they would perform.

Zito got his 1st start of the season and pitched 2 innings. It’s usually around this time that I ask myself “if I could have any pitcher in the game, would it be Zito?” This came after 3 hits and 2 walks, and most notably a leadoff HR by Konerko to start the 2nd inning. Zito came out to start the 3rd, but after giving up a lead off Triple to Youkilis, Zito left the game and the Knight’s ‘pen took over. And take over they did. With no outs and a runner on 3rd, lefty specialist Accardo entered the game to face Markakis who grounded out with the infield in. 1 out. Since the 3rd is no different to me now than the 9th, I pulled Accardo and brought in Izzy to face Martin and Hunter. Strike out, Fly out, inning over.

Shawn Green, in the top half of that inning went deep off El Duque to tie the game. Howie Kendrick would go deep in the 7th, which accounted for the 2nd hit of the night. 2 hits allowed by El Duque through 7 innings, both HRs. Knights lead 2-1. Ouch.

After Konerko hit that HR in the 2nd, then Youkilis hit the triple but was stranded at 3rd, my bullpen dominated. They pitched the last 7 innings, giving up 1 hit and 1 walk. 4th Starter Lincecum was the most dominant, going 2.1 innings, K’ing 5, and not allowing a baserunner.

I got my 3rd and final hit in the 8th inninng. Mora walked to leadoff the inning. I pinch ran Nook who scored standing up after the next hitter, Green, gapped a pitch into opposite field left center. Can you see it? I can. It was a beauty. Tavares pinch ran at 2nd, advanced to 3rd on a Theriot fly out, and scored on a Josh Fields sac fly. Knights up 4-1.

Papelbon would close the game with phenom Saito ready in the wings. He is still waiting.

The Knights got 3 hits, walked twice, scored 4 runs, and left 1 man on base. That’s efficiency baby. My offense is hitting .197, 2nd worst in the league. Fortunately, the league is hitting .184 against me, the best in the league.
